Right when I moved back home, we decided to paint and decorate my new bedroom. Bedroom makeover, here I come!
For a couple of years now, I’ve been planning how I want the room to look. I picked the aesthetic I was going for. I collected the décor I wanted. I even bought paint for the room a few months ago, all in preparation for coming home soon.
Why I Moved Home to Connecticut
With all of the COVID-19 craziness around us, Villanova moved all my grad classes online. The adjustment hasn’t been too bad for me. I’ve taken a number of communication courses online over the last couple of years. It’s definitely harder for a class designed to be in-person to transition online — especially the seminar-style one I’m in this semester because it’s so reliant on class discussion. The tone of the class has changed a lot, but we’ve all managed to still make it enjoyable and worthwhile.
With my classes all online now, I decided to move back home to Connecticut to my mom’s house. I haven’t lived there for more than a few months at a time in the last five years. Throughout that time we’ve had some renovations done on the house and shifted rooms around a bit. I moved my bedroom into a different room where I could fit a bigger bed. Since I haven’t been here for any very long period of time, though, I never decorated or really made it my own. All this means that now was the perfect time for a bedroom makeover.
My Bedroom Makeover
To start off the bedroom makeover, my mom and I worked together to prep and paint the walls and trim. Now that everything is set up the way I’ve been imagining I absolutely love it!
Here are some photos of how it looks now!
The paint color is Behr Greige, and the Trim is Behr Ultra Pure White. This greige is a lovely grey with a hint of brown. When the sun shines into my bedroom it’s almost a shade of blue. It looks exactly how I was hoping! It really compliments the white and blush accents I picked for my bedding and furniture. A successful bedroom makeover if I’ve ever seen one!
My mom spent a lot of time caulking and sanding things down before we painted, then I helped with the taping and painting the trim. We did the walls with paint rollers, and all in all, it came out great.
Of course, I’m really missing my apartment and my friends back in Pennsylvania. But I’m happy to be transitioning back home and grateful to be around my family and boyfriend again.
The Bedroom Details
My duvet cover is from Target. It’s a bit of a challenge with three cats but with frequent washing, I’m making it work. If you’re wondering, it’s this one. I chose it because the grey stitching really helped tie the room together. It’s very easy to wash and zips at the bottom for easy removal.
My desk is the IKEA LINNMON, and the IKEA ADILS legs, originally blue (it’s all they had left during school move-in time when I first got it) are covered in a marble-patterned contact paper. Super easy project!
All the rest of my bedroom furniture is from Ethan Allen and is actually from my childhood bedroom. It still looks great and has needed minimal upkeep—mainly just replacing the knobs on the dresser. It matches the aesthetic I was going for so I was happy to keep using it.
Organizing My Clothing
As far as organizing my clothing and books… Well, I have way too much of everything. But after reading The Home Edit and Marie Kondo’s book, I felt better about what to keep and to donate. I folded all my clothing Marie Kondo style, which is something I’ve been doing for the last few years. It really helps with being able to see everything you have and keeps you from forgetting about older clothing.
The Home Edit suggests putting things in rainbow order, which I just absolutely love. As you can see, my bookshelf is organized in rainbow order on each shelf. My clothing is as well, sorted by category then color. I love the way it looks when I open my closet or dresser drawers. Plus, I can find everything so easily now.
Next up, I’ll be helping my mom redecorate and paint the rest of the house! It’ll be a lot of work, but it’s a worthwhile project. In the end, I know it’ll look great! In the meantime, I’ll be continuing to work on all of my other goals for this year.
Leave a comment if you have any questions about the details of my bedroom makeover, and let me know if there are any home projects you’re looking to tackle this year.
